Notre Dame Cathedral
One thing that is apparent throughout European cities is the size and grandness of the churches and cathedrals of the Roman Catholic Church and Church of England – Westminster Abbey, St Pauls, The Cathedrals of Manchester, Birmingham, Bath and Edinburgh. The Notre Dame Cathedral was magnificent. Work commenced on Notre Dame in 1163, it is quite a different design from all the other cathedrals that we have seen so far and is French-gothic architecture. We went inside the cathedral and it was quite an experience. The interior is expansive, quite dark and only illuminated by candles, dim lights and the magnificent stained glass windows. The experience of being inside Notre Dame was made even more surreal because there was organ music playing as we entered the cathedral, it was very quiet and could hardly be heard and eventually the organs would reach a loud crescendo which reverberated through the cathedral, it was an amazing place to be and the organ music made this a special experience. Matt and I both had to sit down and appreciate this very special experience.
